Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is A Lung Cancer Screening Done?
A lung cancer screening is done to detect the presence of lung cancer in individuals who do not yet show symptoms of the disease. It is particularly recommended for long-term smokers and those at high risk due to their smoking history and age.
How Does a Lung Cancer Screening Work?
Lung cancer screenings are usually performed using a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan. This type of scan uses X-rays to create detailed images of the lungs, which can help detect abnormalities or signs of cancer.
What Happens Before, During, And After A Lung Cancer Screening?
Before: You will receive specific instructions from your healthcare provider, usually to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the scan.
During: During the scan, you will lie on a table that slides into the CT scanner. You will need to stay still and may be asked to hold your breath briefly to get clear images.
After: There is no downtime after the scan, and you can typically go about your day normally. Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you during a follow-up appointment.
How Should I Prepare For a Lung Cancer Screening?
You should wear comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry or other metal objects that might interfere with the imaging. Follow any other specific instructions given by your healthcare provider.
What Should I Bring To a Lung Cancer Screening?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance information, and any forms or documents provided by your doctor’s office. Also, bring a list of any current medications you are taking.
What Are The Benefits And Risks Of a Lung Cancer Screening?
Benefits: The primary benefit is the early detection of lung cancer, which can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and survival.
Risks: There are minimal risks associated with low-dose CT scans. There is exposure to low levels of radiation, but the potential health benefits outweigh the small risk. There’s also a possibility of false positives that could lead to further testing or unnecessary anxiety.
