- Please inform the technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
- Certain thyroid medications need to be stopped prior to exam, please consult with your physician or our scheduling department before scheduling
- This procedure is a multiple day exam
- Your doctor’s office may draw a blood sample to check your thyroid levels prior to scheduling the exam
- You may be asked to discontinue your thyroid hormone medications or be scheduled for 2 days of pretreatment with Thyrogen prior to administration of I131 capsule

Why Is A Metastatic Survey Scan Performed?
A nuclear medicine I 131 Metastatic survey Scan is used to detect areas of residual functioning thyroid tissue and thyroid cancer.
What Will Happen During The Metastatic Survey Scan?
A Nuclear medicine technologist will perform the exam.
The technologist will give you a capsule of a radioactive I 131. You will then be instructed to return for imaging 48 hours later and again 5 or 7 days later.
Imaging on both days will take approximately 1 hour.
The camera is open so you are not completely surrounded and the technologist may stay in the scan room with you. You will be asked to hold still but, you do not need to hold your breath.
How Should I Prepare For A Metastatic Survey Scan?
Clothing
Please wear comfortable clothing. Refrain from wearing jewelry.
Medications
Certain thyroid medications may need to be stopped prior to scheduling the procedure. Please consult with our scheduling department or your physician.
Food and Drink
You may eat and drink before and during the exam
